Twitter is one of the social media giants next to Facebook when it comes to initiating and creating effective marketing campaigns. As of April 2016, approximately 310 million people use Twitter, the estimated number of registered user accounts is 3.1 billion, and there are 100 million daily active users. Needless to say, without Twitter, you could be missing out on promoting your company and its brand to a ton of people who may be interested in what you have to offer.

If you’re stuck on how to do so, you’ve come to the right place. Without further ado, these three actions are a handful of the best practices to perform when it comes to creating and putting Twitter marketing campaigns to good use.

1: Be Active on a Daily Basis

If the stats above weren’t enough indication, it’s important to be active on a daily basis as there are millions of people who do just that. Daily activity on Twitter means doing all of the following on there:

  • Sending out a tweet
  • Sharing or “retweeting” other people’s tweets
  • Favouriting other tweets
  • Adding photos
  • Responding to comments

All of these actions are good ways to branch out to your audience.

2: Use Hashtags Properly

If you’re ever on Twitter, sometimes you may see this symbol (#) being used in front of a phrase. This is referred to as a hashtag, and it was actually Twitter who was first in line to do this. A hashtag is commonly used in order to relate any published tweet to a topic that’s trending (i.e. it’s popular among active users), making it easier for followers to find promotions and phrases that they are interested in.

The best hashtag to put into good use is one that works for the benefit of everyone involved. For example, there’s this tweet courtesy of Andrew Malcolm, who posted this update on Twitter in February 2015:

“For every retweet this gets, Pedigree will donate one bowl of dog food to dogs in need! 🙂   #tweetforbowls

The result was an astounding 650,000+ retweets and of Pedigree exceeding their campaign’s goal and its expectations! All because the hashtag accomplished several things:

  • It related to the campaign being promoted;
  • It was tweeted for a great cause;
  • It got its community involved;
  • It was done to provide a positive impact on the world.

All of which when put together make for a highly effective marketing campaign.

And speaking of community…here’s the next solid practice.

3: Reach Out to Your Followers

You’re not going to get anywhere without followers who are paying attention to what you have to say – that’s a given. Likewise, you won’t get anywhere if you have followers but rarely use Twitter.

Finding the sweet spot between how often to tweet versus when to read and listen to your followers is something many people have been trying to figure out since Twitter was first established. The general consensus on how often to tweet seems to be approximately 5 times per day, but that really depends on your business and how knowledgeable you are about using Twitter. See what works best for you, because not every business will have the same results.

As you would do so on Facebook, it’s crucial to reach out to your community on Twitter. Read their comments, respond to comments directed to you in as polite a manner as you would in real life, and be actively involved with promoting and supporting their interests. This is essentially the golden rule for all social media platforms and campaigns, because that’s what social media is all about – to build a community, not just blast information out onto the Internet.
