You should most importantly bear in mind the type of font used for your logo; beware of too much white space and gimmicky fonts that divert attention from your logo rather than attract it.

A good company logo should not only fit your printed materials, but also look good on your products; Adidas, for example, works its backgrounds into its shoes, clothing, and social media, making it a relevant design that lasts throughout the years.
